LUTUNG KASARUNG
(THE FOLKLORE FROM WEST JAVA)
Once upon a time , there was a palace beside a jungle. There was an old king , his name was Prabu Tapa Agung. He had two daughters Purbasari and Purbalarang. Purbalarang didn’t like to Purbasari because their mother give more love to Purbasari than her. When their mother was died, Purbalarang slader Purbasari in order her father give more love to her than Purbasari. But because she was lying , her father give more love to Purbasari than Purbalarang.
Prabu Tapa Agung planned to retire as a king. He want Purbasari to replace him to be the leader of the kingdom. Hearing this , Purbalarang was angry.
“you can’t ask her to be the next Queen , Father. I am older than she is. It’s supposed to be me , not her !” , Purbalarang said. But , the king still choose Purbasari to be the next Queen.
Then , Purbararang and her fiancé set a bad plan. They went to witch and ask her to put a spell on Purbasari. Later , Purbasari had bad skin. There were black dots all over her body.
“you are not as beautiful as I am, you can’t be the Queen. You have to leave this palace and stay in a jungle.”, Purbararang said.
Because Prabu was ashamed had a daughter like Purbasari. He was chasing away her to searching for medicine. Prabu said , “ The palace’s door always open for you if your ill was cured.”
Purbasari was very sad. Now , she had stay in a jungle. She spent her time playing with some animals there. There was a monkey that always tried to cheer her up. It was not just an ordinary monkey , he had a magical power. He also could talk with humans. The monkey’s name was Lutung Kasarung. He actually a god. His name was Shanghyang Guruminda.
Lutung Kasarung planned to help Purbasari. He mad small lake and asked her to take a bath there. Amazingly , her bad skin was cured. She got her beautiful skin back. So , Purbasari asked Lutung Kasarung to accompany her to go back to the palace.
Purbalarang was very shocked. She knew she had to come up with another bad idea. She said , “ who have longer hair will be the queen.” And then , the king measured the daughter’s hair. Purbasari had longer hair. Purbalarang didn’t give up.
“ a Queen must have a handsome husband , if my fiancé is more handsome than yours I will be the Queen ,” Purbalarang said.
Purbasari was very sad. She knew Purbalarang’s fiancé Indrajaya was handsome. And she didn’t have a fiancé yet. “here is my fiancé , Indrajaya. Where is yours ?” Purbalarang asked. Lutung Kasarung came forward. Purbalarang was laughing very hard , “hahaha , your fiance is a monkey ?”.
Suddenly , Lutung Kasarung changed in to very handsome man. He was even more handsome than Indrajaya. So , Purbasari became the Queen.
Purbalarang was angry. Suddenly , Purbalarang and Indrajaya changed into the beast man , look like Purbasari before became the Queen. So, they were asking for help to Purbasari for curing them. Purbasari want to help them but she didn’t know where the lake except Lutung Kasarung. First , he didn’t want to help them but, Purbasari asked him to show the lake.
Finally , they were cured, purbasari forgave them and she let them to stay in the palace.
